Metin Akay

Founding chair of the new Biomedical Engineering Department and the John S. Dunn professor of biomedical engineering at the University of Houston.Dr. Akay has played a key role in promoting biomedical education in the world by writing and editing several books, editing several special issues of prestigious journals, including the Proc. of IEEE, and giving more than hundred keynote, plenary and invited talks at international conferences, symposiums and workshops regarding emerging technologies in biomedical engineering. He is the founding editor-in-chief of the Biomedical Engineering Book Series published by the Wiley and IEEE Press and the Wiley Encyclopedia of Biomedical Engineering. He is also the editor of the Neural Engineering Handbook published by Wiley/IEEE Press and the first steering committee chair of the IEEE Trans on Computational Biology and Bioinformatics

Perry Frederick, MSEE, EMBA

Senior Director for Strategic Research in Europe for GE Healthcare –  a leading global medical technology and life sciences company providing a broad portfolio of products, solutions and services used in the diagnosis, treatment and monitoring of patients and in the development and manufacture of biopharmaceuticals.  Responsible for initiating and growing sustainable collaborative research relationships via leadership of Regional Research Managers covering Europe, Russia, and the Middle East in addition to Clinical Research Scientists supporting relevant sponsored studies. Plays an essential role in delivering evidence for GE Healthcare’s strategic research needs. Previous positions/experience include: ‘88-‘91 – Edison Engineering Program; ‘91-‘97 – MR Product Development Manager; ‘97-‘02 European Product Marketing Manager; ‘02-‘09 – Strategic Account Director, Stanford University; ‘10-‘17 – Regional Academic Research Manager, US West Coast. Presentations at numerous Med Tech Society meetings; several patents in Healthcare Imaging and IT-related domains.


 

Ali Khademhosseini

He is the Director and CEO of the Terasaki Institute for Biomedical Innovation (TIBI) and Amazon Researcher. He was the Levi Knight Professor of Bioengineering, Chemical Engineering and Radiology at the University of California-Los Angeles (UCLA). He was the Founding Director of the Center for Minimally Invasive Therapeutics at UCLA. He joined UCLA starting Nov. 2017 from Harvard University where he was Professor at Harvard Medical School (HMS) and faculty at the Harvard-MIT’s Division of Health Sciences and Technology (HST), Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) and as well as associate faculty at the Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering. At Harvard University, he directed the Biomaterials Innovation Research Center (BIRC) a leading initiative in making engineered biomedical materials.Prof. Khademhosseini is a leader in applying bioengineering solutions to precision medicine. For example, he has developed numerous techniques in controlling the behavior of patient-derived cells to engineer artificial tissues and cell-based therapies. He is also developing ‘organ-on-a-chip’ systems that aim to mimic human physiology and pathology to enable patient-specific evaluation of drug candidates. He has edited multiple books / journal special issues and is an author on >500 peer-reviewed journal articles, editorials and review papers, >60 book chapters/edited books and >20 patent/disclosure applications.  He has been cited >60,000 times and has an H-index of 109. Also, he has given over >250 invited seminars and keynote lectures. Annually for the past four years he has been selected by Thomson Reuters as one of the World’s Most Influential Minds as a Highly Cited Researcher.

Antonios G. Mikos

Louis Calder Professor of Bioengineering and Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at Rice University. He is the Director of the National Institutes of Health Center for Engineering Complex Tissues, the Director of the Center for Excellence in Tissue Engineering, and the Director of the J.W. Cox Laboratory for Biomedical Engineering at Rice UniversityProf. Mikos is recognized for his research on the synthesis, processing, and evaluation of new biomaterials for use as scaffolds for tissue engineering, as carriers for controlled drug delivery, as non-viral vectors for gene therapy, and as platforms for modeling disease. His work has led to the development of novel orthopaedic, dental, cardiovascular, neurologic, and ophthalmologic biomaterials.He is the author of over 580 publications and 29 patents. He is the editor of 15 books and the author of one textbook (Biomaterials: The Intersection of Biology and Materials Science, Pearson Prentice Hall, 2008). Mikos is among the top one percent most cited researchers in his field. He has been cited over 68,000 times and has an h-index of 137.

C. L. Max Nikias

Malcolm R. Currie Chair in Technology and the Humanities and Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Classics of the University of Southern California (USC). Holder of the Malcolm R. Currie Chair in Technology and the Humanities, President Emeritus and a Life Trustee of USC. He has been at USC since 1991, and in addition to his work as a professor, has served as founding director of the Integrated Media Systems Center, an NSF Engineering Research Center (1995-2001), dean of the Viterbi School of Engineering (2001-2005), provost and executive vice president (2005-2010), and president (2010-2018).Prof. Nikias is recognized internationally for his pioneering research on digital signal processing, digital media systems, and biomedicine. The U.S. Department of Defense has adopted a number of his innovations and patents in sonar, radar, and communication systems. He has authored more than 275 journal articles and conference papers, three textbooks, and eight patents, and has mentored more than 30 Ph.D. and postdoctoral scholars.

Christina Triantafyllou, Ph.D.

Head of Marketing in Improving Patient Experience at Siemens Healthineers. Christina holds a Ph.D. in the field of Medical Physics from Kings College, University of London, UK. Prior to joining Siemens she held appointments as faculty at Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School and as the Associate Director of the Imaging Center at the Brain and Cognitive Sciences Department at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Boston, U.S. Her academic and research career focused on ultra-high-field MRI and neuroimaging. In 2012 she joined Siemens Healthineers as the Director of Global Ultra High Field (UHF) Business Management in the MR Business Line, thereafter, transitioning to positions as Director of UHF Product Relationship Management and Global Director of UHF MR Solutions. In these roles she focused on business strategy, KOL-based collaboration projects in MR innovation/clinical translation, and product management for the first worldwide clinical 7T MR system.
